Mintty, a Cygwin terminal based on PuTTY’s terminal emulation code, automatically ensures that its charset matches Cygwin 1.7′s. It’s also got a workaround for the many Windows monospace fonts that are missing a glyph for the soft hyphen, which otherwise causes an empty box or question mark to be shown.
