A lot of people are having problems connecting the Sony BDP-BX57 and BDP-S570 Blu-ray disc players to the Internet via Wi-Fi with encryption enabled (WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc.). I ran into this as well, but eventually got it working with a pretty easy fix. So, don’t return yours to Costco or BestBuy just yet.
To make sure your connection problem isn’t a configuration error, be sure that your SSID in the player’s wireless network configuration matches the one in your wireless router (properly entered upper- and lowercase letters, if any). It’s a good idea to turn off all wireless encryption to verify that the Blu-ray player connects via Wi-Fi without it and that video or music streams properly over the network.
Finally, verify that your Blu-ray player’s firmware is up to date. Some earlier network problems were the result of firmware bugs and you want to make sure that you’re not suffering from one of those problems. The current version, at the time of this post, is M04.R.735. To find the firmware version in your disc player, do the following:
- From the player’s main menu, scroll all the way to the left to Setup.
- Select System Settings, then System Information at the bottom.
- The firmware version appears near the top of the screen.
If your firmware is older than M04.R.735, update it before continuing on. I’ll wait right here.
All set to continue? Good. If you updated the firmware, double check that unencrypted wireless is still working. Now, re-enable encryption in the wireless router, set the corresponding encryption mode in the player (WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc.) and enter the correct encryption key. At this point, if you’re encountering the problem, having enabled encryption will result in a good wireless connection, but no Internet access. The player’s green Wi-Fi LED on the front of the device will be on, but the IP address will start with 169 instead of the usual 172 or 192.
It seems that firmware changes can introduce problems with the network configuration information or other related data in the system. As a result, encryption over the wireless doesn’t work properly. To fix this, do the following:
- In the player’s menu, scroll all the way to the left to Setup.
- Scroll to the bottom and select Resetting.
- Select Reset to Factory Default Settings. Don’t worry, it won’t reset just yet.
- Select Network Settings to wipe out all the network configuration data.
- Re-enter the wireless network settings that you did before. (I know, it’s a pain.)
That’s it. It should connect to the wireless and to the Internet now. Wiping the old network data and re-entering it removes whatever was causing the wireless not to properly encrypt the network communication. If, for some reason, resetting just the Network Settings isn’t enough, you can opt to reset everything. It’s the last reset item in the menu.
Did it work for you? Do you have a different model Sony Blu-ray player or even a different brand with a similar problem and found a fix? Post your experiences in the comments.
@Bryan: LOL! Yeah, that’s a hybrid medical networking product.
@john: Have you already tried using a public DNS server? That fix has worked for many.
@Mike: That “already up to date” behavior does sound odd. First, try resetting just the network settings in the player to get rid of any anomalies there and put in your desired network configuration. If that doesn’t work, reset everything. It sounds like there may be some bad data stuck in there. You can also try resetting everything and then reapplying the update to see if it’ll finally accept it.
hi..everytime i try n upgrade my player works till 7/9 of the upgrade patch and then it says communication break down it worked fine when i first started but when i try n upgrade it would stop at server interrupted …how do i fix this..
I tried entering WPA number in and it does not connect Any suggestions???
@vishal: Try the reset procedure in the post to clear out any potential bad data from the settings. Then, upgrade and reset again. If you still can’t upgrade, you can download the new firmware from Sony, burn it onto a DVD and upgrade that way.
@Chris: Does everything work properly if you disable WPA on the router? It’s best to get everything fully working with no encryption first. That way, you know the Wi-Fi is fine.
Have a BX57 that worked wireless for about the past 18 months. Last used the internet last February. Wouldn’t work this past week. Connected to WiFi fine (encryption fine). No internet.
I have a Linksys E2000 that is just a WAP as I have a DSL router with the DNS. I looked at the address table on the router and saw that the BX57 was getting an address but timed out within about 60 seconds. Seems that the router is waiting for an acknowledgement of some kind.
Anyway I decided to try assigning of an address (.105) and the Google servers as suggested above. Works fine.
Feels kind of like something in the player has gone bad or a bad software update. My software is v. M04.r.787.
Any thoughts?
Tom
Such problems. Connected to the internet fine. Trouble started with the update. Can’t get past 1/9. Next screen says to “retry”. Keeps retrying with same result. At least 5 minutes each time it tries to update. Cannot get rid of update screen to see if anything is wrong. Any suggestions?
I Cant conect how do i find the other information it ask 4 like the getaway and some other things i have a dvd blue ray

I am trying to set my blu-ray up to connect to my wi-fi. But, when i scroll over to settings> network options there is no option to select a connection or any such thing. Help.
I was having this issue intermittently after powering up. All network status would be OK but would still get this message.
I turned off “quick start mode” under “system settings” and the issue has been resolved!
@sa: That’s a very interesting solution, turning off Quick Start Mode. Thanks for sharing your fix.
@jessica: That information is available in your router’s configuration. You can also find it on any other devices, such as a laptop, that currently is able to connect to your network.
@Linda: If the player still won’t update over the Internet, you may want to download the update yourself, burn it to a DVD and update the player that way. There are specific instructions on Sony’s site for carrying out the DVD-based update. I also posted some links in an earlier reply here.
@Tom: It sounds like there may be a problem with the dynamic IP configuration process or the Time To Live value for the DHCP on your router is set too low. In any case, if static IP assignment works well, I’d recommend sticking with that. You can limit the range of IPs in the DHCP configuration of your router to avoid the IP you assign to the Blu-ray player. For example, allocate 192.168.1.1 – 192.168.1.100 for DHCP, then assign the player to 192.168.1.105.
Mine won’t even turn on after the up date it just says no signal across the screen of my tv
Thank you so much for your help and all of the comments were actually great as well! I had trouble but then checked my security settings for my gateway router/wifi, made a few tweaks to the firewall and I’m in business!
Netflix, pandora, hulu and other icons simply disappeared off my sony blu ray. It’s connected to the cable though. Any idea of what I have to do?
I have Sony BluRay model BDP-S590. It will not let me watch Netflix. The software update says something about New software being found and requires an update. It will not complete the update, with the error message “The Gateway is not responding”. I reset my connections to factory. My Internet settings say they are linked to my Linksys (with no security on it), Network Connection Diagnostics say it is connected correctly.
Connection Server Settings say that it has failed and gave me two VIP addresses and numbers below (I don’t know what they mean):
VIP 222K R012756 2184
00:24:af:46:2f:4c
and
VIP 222K R012754 3698
00:24:af:3d:63:e9
The IP address that comes up is different than the one my laptop says my server uses. I can’t figure out how to change that. I tried to update my Firmware, but it does not give me an option to do so.
Software version is: M12.R.0320
Device ID: B0:00:00:EA:D3:73
Link Connection Status: Succeeded
I do not have the ability to move this to the wired LAN without moving the big tv into another room.
The manual is USELESS! Please help! Thanks! p.s.I’m functionally illiterate with what all the tech terms mean so please speak very concisely and with non-tech terms whenever possible. 🙁
AARRRGGHH!! Why can’t anything just come out of the box and WORK?? My player is stuck at the “failed” screen. I’ve tried unplugging it, pushing every button on the remote, etc, etc! I’m so frustrated and just about to take it back.. POS!!
This Blue Ray player should never have been made… I had a wireless set up and it was really flaky. After I could absolutely no longer get my wireless set up working (even though the status said connect to the internet) I plugged it directly into a lan cable (which worked on my computer) and still no luck…
I have waste more time on it than it is worth…
Cheers…..
I have the Sony Bluray player BX59. I set it up as directed. Everything worked great. I was able to connect to my wifi and watch Netflix. Watched for a few days, then when I tried to connect to wifi the other day, no luck. Failed! The bluray player sees my wifi, what is the problem?
Does anyone else other than me think that the existence of this blog suggest that Sony has really put out a consumer product that really isn’t a CONSUMER product? In my mind, a consumer product plugs into the wall, maybe connect it to a router and turn it on and it actually works as advertised without having a Senior IT Network Systems Engineer fix it. I’m writing a letter to the consumer protection agency.
